Spencer Brown

You’re off to a bad start when the comedian arrives on stage with a banana skin…

Spencer Brown has been around on the circuit for a while to vastly opposing reviews, some hail him as a genius whilst others damn him to the fiery pit of hell. While I feel that hell would be a little extreme, I must admit, just his choice of icebreaker would make me list more towards that direction.

His act recovers moderately from the shaky start but it is very hard to get past the annoyance of his ‘Look at me, I’m a wacky comedian’ persona and permanently widened eyes. Some of his ‘gags’ are groan worthy and some actually border on scary, especially with his insistence on making far too much eye contact with randomly selected members of the audience.

Spencer has been compared to Steve Martin, and accused of allowing himself to mimic him but from seeing his act, I can’t see anything that calculated, even his poor underpants prop joke seemed half hearted and left the audience feeling somewhat cheated…. And not a little worried about his mental health.
