Emporium of MirthAlun Cochrane
If, like me, the word ‘Compare’ usually makes you recoil in horror Scottish Yorkshireman (long story) Alun Cochrane will be somewhat of a surprise… a compare who makes you laugh more than most of the acts.
He ambles casually onto the stage with the confidence of someone with a pocket full of scripted gags… problem is, he’s not planned a thing, not that you’d notice without him admitting the fact he’s shambled on without a second thought. He charms his way through each short set, his conversational style perfectly suited to the autobiographical yarns he expertly spins.
Every time he returns to the stage he checks the audience are ok before entertaining the audience with tales of his Christmas (When he received 40% proof alcohol signed ‘Love, Santa’), New year and anything that has amused him in the recent past. He makes the audience feel like they really are having a chat with a friend in the living room and his banter with the audience is like watching two friends down the pub.
There are times he gives out to much information about his life, which he readily admits, joking that if his Girlfriend found out the things he’d said, he would be brutally murdered. He quickly moves onto some tv-related current affairs far removed from the standard “how cheesy is Trisha” comments found all too often in stand-up. It is a testament to Alun’s skill that Laugh has a dedicated following, who confess to turning up regardless of who is performing because they know that “With Alun, it’s always a treat”.
Alun Cochrane is the resident compare for Laugh @ Ginglik, under Shepherd’s Bush Green every other Tuesday. He also has a packed schedule of gigs around the country, visit www.aluncochrane.com for more information
