Emporium of MirthStewart Lee
After spending the last few years becoming a successful opera writer and director, Stewart Lee has only been fitting in occasional bursts of stand-up appearances. Finally, it is safe to say he is back (Spring 2004) working the circuit regularly, preparing himself for his run in Edinburgh.
Performing all new material (which he has cunningly written on his hand) Stewart Lee is, as ever, a pleasure to watch as he bends from topicality to vitriol in a few seemingly easy movements. He even manages to blend al quaeda with fart gags without being tasteless, if that’s not genius, I don’t know what is.
In his sojourn with west end smashes, it’s clear that Stewart has lost none of his immediacy and skill as a stand up, his heckler comebacks as inspired as they come “I didn’t hear him as I have slight tinnitus so therefore am legally exempt from having to provide a witty retort”.
Dammit, it’s good to have him back. Just DON’T mention Ben Elton.
