Emporium of Mirth

Sean Lock

It was a painfully modest crowd greeting Sean Lock for his first performance in what seems like decades, yet still he managed to come up trumps.

Observational comedy all too often becomes formulaic and staid, but Lock weaves a rather odd and not a little random twist into each profundity. We’re not talking “and then I got off the bus” here, we’re talking “and then I found out the albatross was made of marzipan”.

Lock even manages to turn the lack of crowd into material, claiming the atmosphere is like “a cup final… about eight hours before kick off”. However, he does seem to do this a little too much, which actually draws attention to the low turnout instead of ploughing on regardless. However, his slightly disheartened delivery serves to turn each analogy into an embittered echo of modern society.

Sounds depressing, you might think, but rest assured, Lock possesses all the right ingredients to have you falling off your chair.
