Laugh at Ginglik

Laugh @ Ginglik, under Shepherd’s Bush Green (£8)

“I have played in every toilet…..”

As venues go, Ginglik has to be one of the oddest I have ever been to. A converted public convenience under Shepherd’s Bush isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of a good night out, but as soon as you walk down the steps you’re transported into a whole new world.

The walls are festooned with art pieces and the comfy sofas make you feel as though you are in your own living room, the living room you always wanted.

Every other Tuesday, Ginglik is host to ‘Laugh’ a comedy night, which features four acts plus the fantastic compareing skills of Alun Cochrane. Ginglik is a member’s bar, so the clientele is mainly existing members, but do not let that put you off, as this is one of the friendliest crowds I have ever been a part of. Even most of the hecklers were lovely and newcomers are made to feel like old friends.

Between acts their resident DJ plays out what can best be described as “lounge jazz dance” and seems to have a fondness for Mr Scruff, which can only be a good thing, If any musician has the spirit of Ginglik, Mr Scruff is that man.

Overall, this club exceeds any expectations you have when you walk down the rather depressing looking steps and even on occasions when the line up is uninspiring, it is still worth popping along, you never know what you might find...

UPDATE - Summer 2005

Ginglik is still running off of it's Explosive power every fortnight with Alun Cocherane as compare and I'm pleased to report that it's STILL fabulous. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's my favourite club on the circuit. Oh yes indeedy.
