Emporium of MirthThe Comedy Club @ Jumpin Jaks, Basildon Festival Leisure Park
Considering Jumpin Jaks is a night-club in the seediest part of Essex, the set-up of The Comedy Club is actually a pleasant surprise. They’ve made an effort. There’s waiter-service, money-off vouchers for drinks at your next visit, and even a free buffet (although vegetarians may be disappointed with the overly meaty selection). The clientele aren’t the usual Friday night lot who wear hardly any clothes and far too much makeup; there aren’t enough of them to be rowdy, for a start. The audience size is small but substantial. There’s also a joke competition throughout the show, where audience members can win prizes (although these consist mostly of tickets to the next Comedy Club night, but hey!). It’s a good atmosphere, which makes you relax and enjoy the night even if the acts are useless, and even if they are twenty minutes late in starting. Even the graffiti in the toilets says “have a nice day”.
The Comedy Club is held fortnightly Tuesdays from June 22nd, 2004, entry £5
