The Grin Reaper at The Blue Posts

Grin Reaper Comedy Club, The blue Posts, Rupert Street (near Leicester Square)

Free comedy you say? I’m up for that!

Grin Reaper comedy club appears to be somewhat of an experiment. Tucked away in a side street off Leicester Square in a dingy little pub, grin reaper takes place three nights a week hosted by Phil Klein, whom it appears does everything for this club (including standing out in Leicester Square with a banner). Its Location dictates that on the day we went down to review, 95% of the crowd was comprised of tourists and people who couldn’t get into the Comedy Store.

As such, most of the acts struggled quite a lot, with a lot of the material sailing straight over the audience’s heads so I don’t feel it would be fair to review any of the acts based on this particular evening’s performance.

Most of the acts, I feel were struggling comedians at the beginning, trying to make a name for themselves in an almost overcrowded circuit and there was a feel that they were all pulling together (a look at subsequent line-ups confirms that most of the acts on offer play the club regularly). And I admire them for this, though their location may mean they are playing to the wrong crowd.

There were two stand-out acts of the night however, who seemed to appeal to the international audience, the first was Aussie Mat Dektinski (who to be fair, probably had a head start) and Isy Suttie, complete with her ukulele. A lot of the acts on offer appeared to be either just starting out, or testing the water of the London circuit and as such, if you go, expect a mixed bag.

All In all, I think we all should be supporting Grin Reaper, you never know, you may discover the next big thing...
