It's Been a Bad Week

Have you ever heard the saying that, no matter how bad your week’s going, someone somewhere will be having a worse time of it than you? This is the show that proves it. Brought to you by Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis are tales of sorrow and woe from around the world…. so that we can make fun of them. Oh come on, isn’t that the very essence of Britishness?

Each candidate, from cats with their arses stuck down plugholes to criminals too dumb to even be featured on “America’s Dumbest Criminals”, competes for the big prize, “The Worst Week of the Week Award Awarded Weekly on a Week by Week Basis”, which is certainly an honour.

The show combines well-crafted wit, cleverly placed sound effects and brilliant comedy timing with a natural desire to laugh at others’ misfortune. It’s a winning formula, as the well-deserved longevity of the show has confirmed.
Regular listeners will undoubtedly benefit from the running jokes each series engenders- in fact, something of a Punt and Dennis trademark. The pair are joined by their Now Show colleague Mitch Benn, who provides musical accompaniment to, amongst other things, Tony Blair’s Purple Dust incident and Apple Martin’s unfortunate misnomer (she’s a baby, not a piece of fruit!). Other cast members include Sue Perkins, Lewis McLeod and Toby Longworth, who add their comic talents to the melange.

Once you’ve listened to this show, you’ll definitely want to tune in every week. If not for the fantastic humour, at least to take comfort in the knowledge that you’re not as stupid as the man who took his computer back to the shop he got it from after filling it with potatoes. Twice.

It’s Been a Bad Week is on Radio 2, Thursdays, 10pm, repeated Saturdays, 1:30pm.
