The Mighty Boosh

…Six years and countless awards later, Noel Fielding and JulianBarratt’s (it’s all one word) first mainstream TV outing is finally about to hit our screens. Now, I don’t mind admitting that I have been chomping at the bit for this particular televisual treat so it was with much anticipation that I finally sat down to watch their lovingly created zooniverse grace my screen at long last.

Oh My. It does not disappoint.

The Mighty Boosh sees Noel and Julian reprise their roles as hapless zookeepers Howard Moon (dreamer, traveller, poet, former male prostitute) and Vince Noir (Rock and Roll star, unsuspecting hero, great hair) who seems to attract all manner of mystical adventures under the incapable but ever watchful eye of Zooniverse manager Bob Fossil.

The series is far more akin to the radio 4 series than 2003’s pilot and is far more polished. A lot has changed at the Zooniverse, the biggest change being that Bob Fossil no longer owns the zoo, that honour has now been bestowed on the malevolent Dixon Bainbridge (now played by Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace star Matt Berry) and the character Naboo we met in the pilot is now wheeler-deelering from the zoo gift shop (think Del Boy in a sari).

The adventures, however are the same in one respect, they are just as odd, fun and charming as ever before, transporting you literally to hell and back via fairytale lands and mythical universes. Howard and Vince’s relationship has shifted a little, most notably, Howard’s delusions of grandeur are now pitched more as aspirations, Howard’s inadequacies far more obvious next to Vince’s rock star over confidence.

The scenarios are beautifully absurd and it seems they pull off with style what others would never dare to attempt. You don’t see Frank Skinner boxing a kangaroo or anybody covering storylines like death picking up the wrong guy in his taxi.

The Boosh is mighty, lets just hope the world is ready to feel it’s force coming at them like a ray, like a beam, like a laser.
