Emporium of MirthThe I.T. Crowd
With Graham Linehan writing and directing, and Richard Ayode starring how could it go wrong? We thought. And thankfully, we were very, very right.
My first impression, is that, given it's about computers and technology, the whole things looks a bit old fasioned, the laughter track and slight yellow tinge that comes from filming in front of an audience is engrained on every frame. As I continued watching I realised the IT crowd *is* an old fashioned sitcom, the set ups, the performances and even the plotlines could just as easily come from an episode of Open all Hours, only this time, every single moment had 'Linehan' stamped all over it, from the grannies falling down a multitude of stairs, to the fourth wall breaking white noise at the vague mention of anything that's actually really about IT.
Within about 5 minutes of the opening titles, i'd already realised that I was watching classic television, and to add to that feeling, all the performances were spot on, no timing was out of place, and the sheer siliness of some of the ideas warmed my heart like nothing else so far this year.
