Jerry Springer - The Opera

When I first heard about Jerry Springer the Opera on the grapevine during it’s pre-production I have to admit I was horrified…. Until I found out it was created by two former members of the Seven Raymonds, namely Stewart Lee and Richard Thomas.

Ever since then I’d been procrastinating over seeing it so it was with some excitement that I finally took my seat in the Cambridge theatre. The opening number matched my excitement, hearing dozens of voices all singing together proclamations of their excitement for when Jerry takes the stage.

Stewart and Richard have clearly done their research, as every aspect of the Jerry Springer experience was charted, from the warm up to backstage and, not to give too much away, but to other planes of existence. Though some of the jokes did seem to be catered for people who are already fans of their work (I refer particularly to the “Hat” image) it seems to transcend to everyone without becoming “commercial” and the script so well formed that at times you’re on the edge of your seat despite its outwardly ridiculous premise.

Even after an hour, it is impossible not to be shocked by hearing opera singers swearing and firing insults, you never hear “three nippled cousin F**er” at the English National Opera now, do you?

Jerry Springer the Opera is infinitely enjoyable and I’d be sorely tempted to go for a repeat viewing… if it wasn’t so ruddy expensive.
