Emporium of MirthThe Cutting Edge at The Comedy Store
Every Tuesday, London’s prestigious Comedy Store plays host to “The Cutting Edge” which is a semi- improvised evening of topical comedy, games and music all rolled into one.
Though the line-up mostly different each week the premise is the same, with the first half comprising of short segments of stand up and a topical game where each act has to talk about a news story from the last 18 months suggested by the audience. The audience then has to vote whether that act stays or goes until only one is left. This formula works brilliantly in the Comedy Store as a good atmosphere from the crowd is pretty much a given. Regular Paul Thorne appears to thrive of this audience interaction, weaving the audience’s suggestions into perfectly formed gags and as such is often declared the winner of the first half.
On the night we reviewed, the surprise of the evening (especially as he wasn’t even on the advertised line-up) was Sean Collins. He was clearly (and admittedly) quite drunk and didn’t have a clue about any of the issues raised but somehow he managed to turn it around until a lot of the audience were left crying with laughter whenever it was his turn to take the stage.
At the end of the first half, the audience were asked for a more recent news story for the team to amuse with so that they could rush off and prepare something for when they returned (causing much hilarity when Sean Collins returned with a complete history of the Grand National). And it’s here the acts really have the opportunity to shine with their hastily scribbled bits of paper before the culmination of the evening with “bus stop” and a Whose line is it anyway style improvised song.
All in all, the Cutting edge is a cracking night out which will almost certainly surprise, go!
